Hotel & Hospitality Management's most basic functions are:

• Finance – Registration, organizing, controlling and analyzing all assets, inventories and money flows;
• Distribution – Marketing, PR, sales, channel management, revenue management and other technologies that will bring us guests;
• Operations – All needed activities to receive, accommodate, delight and receive payments from guests and partners.
• Security – Preventing and handling all safety and security issues that may cause harm to guests, employees, inventories, assets and reputation of the company.

The primary focus is always on generating profits and creating good guest experiences, but security must come first. Keeping our property, guests, employees and all our other stakeholders safe, is paramount to the success of the hotel and hospitality asset. Looking at management's other basic functions, how to best “prioritize” them? Without guests, there can be no operations, so distribution is priority number two. A continued business cannot happen if we don’t have return and delighted guests, so operations is the third priority. Finance will have nothing to register if there’s no activity, so it’ll be the fourth priority. This does not mean that one is more important than the other, as we manage the asset, we need to keep these four functions in mind and create success in each one. 

Hotel and hospitality assets are multi-faceted and contain almost everything that we have in our private and commercial lives. Each aspect is simple, but the combination of all aspects, make's the management process challenging. We have sales, marketing, production, finance, human resources, purchasing, revenue management and so many other aspects. This means that the main challenge of hotel management, is the ability to take many small and big decisions very quickly, if we don’t, they’ll pile up and halt the forward process. It’s therefore important to proceed with:

     • Simplicity: Anything too complicated will delay the process and make decision making more difficult.
     • Organization: All processes and systems must be correctly organized, trained and controlled. All unorganized processes and systems will delay operations and provide opportunities for errors.
     • Documentation: All standards and processes must be documented and approved, as well as, accepted by those that will follow them.
